Euryops lateriflorus failed buds

Euryops lateriflorus failed buds
Author: Ivan Lätti

Failed Euryops lateriflorus buds seen here never opened but turned colour to resemble ripe figs. They appear very different to the normal fruitheads when florets produce seeds attached to bristly pappuses.

The reason for their failure is not apparent, the leaves all appearing healthy enough, only slightly paled near their tips in some cases. In addition, there are heads flowering abundantly on the shrub in May, well within the recorded blooming season of the species (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984).
