Euryops virgineus opening flowerheads

Euryops virgineus opening flowerheads
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The small flowerheads of Euryops virgineus grow long-stalked, green and rounded in bud, from leaf axils near stem-tips. The involucres consist of one row of smooth, oval bracts each, in picture they are in various stages of opening, allowing the yellow ray florets to spread.

The flowerhead peduncles are pale, creamy green, similar to the upper stem, contrasting against the darker leaves. Both peduncles and leaves angle up, while new leaves have already started growing from the stem-tip, taller than the flowers (Manning, 2007; Moriarty, 1997).
