Eriocephalus africanus var. africanus fruit woolliness emerging

Eriocephalus africanus var. africanus fruit woolliness emerging
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

These Eriocephalus africanus var. africanus flowerheads have recently started their morph into fruits. The fluffy white seed coverings have not yet fully emerged from below the bracts that surround each head.

The peduncles of these fruitheads are up to 1 cm long. The succulent leaves are also hairy. The photo was taken at Kagga Kamma during September (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; iNaturalist).
