Geranium drakensbergensis half-open flower

Geranium drakensbergensis half-open flower
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

The calyx of a Geranium drakensbergensis flower has acutely pointed lobes ending in elongated tips.

The unfurling, overlapping petals each has one side in and the other out of the flower centre. The veins are much duller on the outer petal surfaces than on the inside.

When the flower opens for the first time, the stamens are present conspicuously, while the style takes its time in getting ready, waiting its turn for performing its reproductive duties (iNaturalist; http://pza.sanbi.org).
