Moraea lewisiae subsp. lewisiae spathes green or dry

Moraea lewisiae subsp. lewisiae spathes green or dry
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

Three green spathes or bracts ending in sloping margins envelop the Moraea lewisiae subsp. lewisiae flower base in picture tightly. The spathes are leaf-like and leathery, tapering to acutely pointed tips.

Below the fruits the spathes are dry and papery, beige in colour (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; Manning and Goldblatt, 1997; iNaturalist; https://www.fernkloof.org.za).
