Moraea polyanthos yellow tepal markings

The bright yellow tepal markings or nectar guides on the Moraea polyanthos corolla designate the rim of the funnel-shaped cup. They serve as pollinator signposts.

The areas of visitor interest are, however, up the central column of the flower. Agility allows them to access those parts. The limitations to their agility and dexterity ensure the inadvertent pollen transport as they feed. Their hosts need is hereby satisfied.

The three very small, recurving style branches divide shortly above the filament column.

There is a fine pleat-line along the centre of each about oblong tepal lobe (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Moriarty, 1997; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist; www.pacificbulbsociety.org).
