Hypoxis colchicifolia mature plant

Hypoxis colchicifolia mature plant
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

Old blackened and new green inflorescences of Hypoxis colchicifolia, stalked and erect, may both be present in a mature plant. Hairiness is still visible on the grey and black old flowers as it is on the outsides of the green-backed tepals of buds.

The leaves are broad (sometimes long and folded), the flowers star-shaped, living up to the broad-leaved stargrass name. Flowering happens from late winter to summer (Manning, 2009; iNaturalist).
