Euryops speciosissimus flowerhead

Euryops speciosissimus flowerhead
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Thabo Maphisa

From above the Euryops speciosissimus flowerhead shows ray florets radiating like wheel spokes from the central disc populated by tiny florets. Only the outer rings of these disc florets are open yet, offering food to and getting pollinated by the visiting insect.

Some visitors have also feasted on ray floret blades here. No worries yet, for composite flowerheads can sacrifice much before they fail to set at least a little seed for next year (Manning, 2009; www.plantzafrica.com).
