Dombeya burgessiae early flower decay

The shallow cup of the Dombeya burgessiae flower raises five broad petal tips around the inner flower parts. The nearly white petals are faintly suffused with pink.

The erect style in the centre is conspicuous, ending in five stigma branches. Around the still functional looking female parts the numerous stamens have withered, only some white filament bases are still spreading from below the base of the superior, green ovary.

The surrounding flowers of the cluster in picture yield a glimpse at some calyces. Five narrow sepal lobes taper to their acutely pointed tips in each flower, spreading back from the curved-in petals (Coates Palgrave, 2002; Pooley, 1993).
