The usually fragrant flowers of Gladiolus permeabilis subsp. edulis may display several colours, including mauve, grey and cream with some yellow. The tepals, excluding the dorsal one at the top, may have maroon to brown lines along the centre, sometimes with yellow along these lines that do not quite reach the tepal tips. The lower, lateral tepals have greenish yellow colouring in their upper, broad parts. These tepals have elongated, narrow tips, undulating and spidery.

Three thick anthers and three style branches are positioned under the dorsal tepal (Goldblatt and Manning, 1998; Lowrey and Wright, 1987; iNaturalist; www.pacificbulbsociety.org).
