Weather dynamics in the Cape Fold Mountains, from Cederberg to Outeniqua, are notorious for sudden changes. The unpopular outcomes manifest in cloud formation, combined with rapid temperature drops at altitude. This is when visibility suddenly collapses due to mist, low cloud or horizontal rain, aggravated by wind exposure.

In summer there are the berg winds, in winter the sure to come rain storms. Trails vanish in the uniformity of the vegetation, misinterpreted animal trails and jeep tracks. Wet restios and proteas suddenly loom in the cold as hostile as the boulders. Confusion grows in confidence loss and escalation of stress. When panic sets in the prospects are beyond bleak.
