The image of a place is retained in the spirit of those that value it. Some people grow fond, even deeply attached to their special places, the sites of their memorable experiences. Often from long ago, those experiences that lose their ordinary bits in memory. Others keep their memories portable. They tend to recreate the sense of peak moments lived anywhere. Or companionship determines the significance of their moments, not the places. “Look and feel” is a good phrase for talking about places shaped by human intervention, by progress.

Natural environments deserve a different kind of respect. Retaining some of the essence amidst rampant population growth becomes more difficult all the time. Pristine places are continually reducing in number, size and integrity. Silence in observing them is valuable for internal cleansing and meaningful communion.

What humanity is about cannot be discovered without dedication to the search for what nature is about.
