Manochlamys albicans ripe fruit

Ripe Manochlamys albicans fruits are densely clustered, like yellow stick candy for summer picnics. Their bract coverings aren’t always easy to see.

Pale green leaves and white sticks enhance the vivid presentation. The fruits turn brown late in summer, if herbivores haven’t eaten them. This is likely as these fruits are highly palatable and melon-scented (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; iNaturalist; http://pza.sanbi.org).
