A party of Cape rockthrush, or in more learned terms Monticola rupestris, found a rock to their liking for a photo near the Sani Pass. Wings are often flicked when they land.
They make cup nests in a rock cavity or on a ledge for two to three eggs in spring or summer. These birds often live solitary or in pairs. To see three of them may mean that some children are still around a parent for now, or a child with parents. Maybe a trio sounds special after lunch in their whistling songs that end in “buzzing trills”.
Lunch of insects, spiders, millipedes, centipedes, molluscs or small frogs may also include some nectar, fruit and seeds. So, mainly carnivorous, they do contribute to pollination and seed dispersal of some plants where they live (Maclean, 1993; Wikipedia).
