    Berzelia lanuginosa leaves

    Berzelia lanuginosa leaves
    Author: Ivan Lätti
    Photographer: Francelle van Zyl

The fine leaves of Berzelia lanuginosa ascend on the stems in whorls positioned fairly close together. The small leaves are narrow to needle-like and light green, lime-green or deep green. The foliage is soft, the plants evergreen.

The upper stems in picture are cream coloured. Lower stems may show dry, browned leaves before they fall. Still lower down old stems on mature plants are bare, the stems grey in varying shades.

Some of the young flowerheads in picture are tipped dark green (Manning, 2009; Bean and Johns, 2005; Naturalist; https://pza.sanbi.org).
