Moraea brevistyla back view of flowers

The backs of these Moraea brevistyla flowers show dense blue-grey lines spreading from basal patches on the tepal lobes towards the outer tepal margins but failing to reach there.

The tepal shape is not quite symmetrical, while undulations add to the irregular appearance as if they were unprepared for the photographer ambushing them. The claws of the outer tepals rising towards the lobes are abruptly bent back and outwards, thickening on the way up. The inner flower parts include stick-like intricacies held up, away from the camera.

The two cylindrically sheathing green spathes below each flower are long, bulging and smooth (Manning, 2009; Pooley, 1998; iNaturalist).
