This plant photographed in the Caledon Wildflower Garden had a sturdy flower stem, but unfortunately the last flowers were gone by October. New ones are expected by in summer. The stem has dark blotching like the leaves.
Some pretty leaf colouring is on view in the absence of flowers. Maroon spots varying in size and shape are scattered unevenly along the leaf surfaces, giving the plant allure in its off-season. The paired leaves have slight inward curvature (Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2010; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
