Aspalathus hirta flowers
Author: Ivan Lätti
Photographer: Louis Jordaan

The bright yellow flowers of Aspalathus hirta grow scattered on or near the tips of short sideshoots, solitary or in small clusters. The calyces are hairy, their lobes needle-like and sharp-tipped as the leaflets.

The wing and keel petals are of equal length and hairless. The large, recurving and centrally pleated banners are grey-haired on the back, parallel-veined on the front in the photo. The flowers are up to 15 mm long.

Flowering happens in spring and early summer (Curtis-Scott, et al, 2020; Vlok and Schutte-Vlok, 2015; Manning, 2007; Bond and Goldblatt, 1984; iNaturalist).
