Erica coccinea subsp. coccinea, sometimes called the red hanging heath does sometimes flower red! That is, the tubular corollas are red in picture, the calyces and bracteoles behind them about white with a suggestion of green on some tips. The long-protruding anthers are brown, appearing dishevelled or diverging slovenly in some cases, beaten in length by the styles of some flowers. White, red and brown have not yet been chosen as the colours for any national flag. People differ from flowers in such matters.
This subspecies produces flowers in groups of three at short branchlet tips.
The spreading and curved leaves are conspicuous on the short-shoots (Manning and Helme, 2024; iNaturalist).
